Real Wedding: Laura + Jeff

Today we are pleased to share the beautiful photos from Laura and Jeff’s wedding at Beaulieu Garden in Yountville, CA.  Their big day took place on a HOT June day, yet despite the heat, Laura managed to look absolutely stunning and flawless throughout the day.  Pat Friday‘s ‘fresh from the garden’ approach to the design of the wedding was full of girly pops of pink { peonies galore! }, lavender and lush hydrangea.   Please enjoy the photos below; our favorite moments from the day were Laura and Jeff’s special dances with their Father and Mother.  Laura and Jeff were such a lovely couple to work with, and we wish them a lifetime of happiness and laughter.

Jennifer + Brandon Tie The Knot

In honor of the first week of Fall, we have the pleasure of sharing the wedding of Jennifer and Brandon. Their wedding was full of warm Fall colors, echoing the surrounding grape vines which were in the process of transitioning from shades of green to yellows, oranges and reds.

In the months following her wedding, we asked Jennifer to share the story of her relationship and wedding to Brandon. Here she shares their sweet story, as well as some helpful tips on making the most of your own special day:

There was a lot of history leading up to our big day. Brandon and I grew up together since elementary school, and share many mutual childhood friends. We even went to the high school prom together!

0001.120915.0034k_rc1 5_0066.120915.0195k_rc5 6_0076.120915.0157k_rc6 8_0098.120915.0283k_rc8

We went our separate ways for college, but one day during summer break our paths crossed in our hometown Clayton, Ca.  We hung out together almost every day that summer, even before we started dating.

We dated for about three years before Brandon proposed at one of our favorite picnic spots at Rutherford Hill winery.  It was the most perfectly romantic proposal; just the two of us overlooking the valley.  We then spent the weekend visiting other wineries across the valley.

I always knew I wanted to find a venue in the wine country, so I asked our friends, the Sherwins, of Sherwin Family Vineyards, if they had any suggestions.  They told me about Beaulieu Garden.  After seeing Beaulieu firsthand, we knew immediately that this was the spot!

We were engaged for a year and four months before we got married. We had a lot of close friends getting married that same year, so we wanted to choose a date that gave enough space between all the different events. We also liked the idea of getting married in September, as the weather is usually mild and the vines are lush with grapes.

When the wedding day finally arrived it was absolutely beautiful. The venue was gorgeous, and the flowers were absolutely amazing! It is so wonderful to see all the details come together and look more outstanding than I could have ever imagined. It was so special to have all of our friends and family coming together to celebrate our marriage and future lives together. I was so excited to see Brandon, to be with Brandon and to start our life together. It was so exciting that the day had finally arrived.

On the day of the wedding, I was so happy and I felt so blessed that all I could do was smile. I watch my wedding video and I laugh because on my wedding day all you can see is teeth! I am smiling from ear to ear the whole time. Brandon and I had the most incredible time at our wedding. We enjoyed ourselves and had tons of fun! We danced with our friends and family and truly enjoyed our time together. It truly was an amazing day filled with so much love and a tremendous amount of happiness.

The best advice I could give to other brides is to take a few moments to take it all in.  For Brandon and me, our first opportunity to do so was after the formal dances and speeches. We went around the property with our photographer and took pictures of just the two of us. These were the moments during which we could view the reception and watch all of our guests dancing and having fun. It was so cool to see our wedding from a distance. It was also nice to have time for just the two of us to be alone and appreciate our special day.

It can be overwhelming when you are surrounded by all the guests. Part of you feels obligated to visit with people you haven’t seen in a long time or to thank people for coming. I think it is very important to step away with your husband for a short time to relax and take in all the special little moments. Otherwise it can seem like the day went by way too fast. So remember to have fun and enjoy every moment!

~

Happy Anniversary, Jennifer and Brandon!

2013 Trends: Lighting

This month we are excited to turn our eye towards 2013 Trends in Lighting, care of Ashley Hugus, Wedding & Social Event Manager at Got Light.  Got Light is one of our favorite and most trusted special event design and production companies, and we knew right away we wanted to reach out to them for their expertise on the matter of lighting.  It’s clear to us from this interview that Got Light has a lot of fun innovative ideas in the pipeline, and we look forward to partnering with them on many spectacular weddings this year!

Q:  Incorporating proper lighting into the overall design of a wedding is essential.  Can you help explain why the need for lighting is so important?
Screen shot 2013-03-29 at 6.04.40 PM
A:  Lighting completely transforms the entire look and ambiance of your event.  It can be subtle or striking, but will always have a profound impact on the overall look of your venue.  Illuminated decor, such as chandeliers, mason jars, or pathway lights can also create bold statements for your event with light.  Our experts at Got Light layer in color, texture, kinetic movement, and subtle highlights.   We take your event from “lit” to “WOW!”
Q: Can you please define what an uplight, pin spotting and wash are? Can you share some photos/examples with us?
Screen shot 2013-03-29 at 6.04.40 PM
A:  Sure!  Here they are:
  • Uplight:  Uplights are compact lighting fixtures in varying sizes and wattages (depending on the event space) that are placed on the ground up against the perimeter walls or key architectural features, adding light and color to the walls, ceiling, and providing an ambient indirect glow.  Uplights shine up a wall and naturally fill a  space with light and color.  We consider uplighting to be the primer or “base coat” to lighting, being the first course of action to transform a room with light.  For  exteriors, uplighting is used on key landscape elements and trees, adding drama and illumination to an outdoor setting. Uplighting can be any color of your  choice, preferably a color that ties in with the linens, florals, or overall color palette.

  • Pin Spot:  A pin spot is a sharp, focused light directed at a floral centerpiece, wedding cake, or certain types of decor.  Pin spotting not only helps illuminate the room, but can make dining tables pop with light.  Pin spots can be white light or they can be colored with a light tinted GEL to help bring out the colors of a floral centerpiece.   Pin spots are best for rooms or venues where the pin spot can be mounted or aimed from above the tables.  If that’s not an option, pin spots can be mounted to a tree along the perimeter of the room and aim towards the centerpiece or cake at an angle.  For large centerpieces, often we will recommend two-sided pin spotting for the best look.  We are always happy to advise whether or not pin spotting is appropriate or effective based on your venue and florals.

  • Wash:  Washes in lighting are broad projections of illumination, color, and/or pattern.    A wash is sometimes a necessity, not a design element, such as a “band wash”.  Or a wash can be colored or patterned to introduce character and design, such as a “ceiling wash”, “wall wash” or “dance wash”.  In lighting, a wash merely refers to projection(s) of illumination to either establish visibility or to liven up a space with more illumination, style, or color.

Q: Which 2012 trends and colors will we be seeing less of in 2013?
Screen shot 2013-03-29 at 6.04.40 PM
A:  In 2012, we began seeing a lot of yellow with black/grey color combinations.  The trend of bold color schemes including teals, purples and magentas are definitely on the rise!
Screen shot 2013-03-29 at 6.04.40 PM
Q:  Any new special lighting features you’re rolling out in 2013 that you’d like to share with us?  Can you share some photos/examples with us?
Screen shot 2013-03-29 at 6.04.40 PM
A:  Our latest signature style is producing your event with the smallest visible footprint of production nonsense.  This includes custom wooden housing to cover our lighting hardware in a variety of paint and stains.  This replaces a standard uplight color with a beautiful, rustic cover that becomes part of the wedding decor and design.

We pride ourselves on immaculate attention to detail and are continually designing tricks to hide the wiring.  We want to show off your event, not show off our toys!
Screen shot 2013-03-29 at 6.04.40 PM
Q: Are you seeing any new color requests in 2013?
Screen shot 2013-03-29 at 6.04.40 PM
A:  Emerald is the IT color of 2013!  We are seeing a lot of rich aqua hues and complimentary tones, such as green and magenta.  For weddings, ivory and blush or monochromatic schemes never go out of style.  We do a lot of neutral tones, especially for outdoor weddings.  Beautiful venues and a gorgeous landscapes speak for themselves.  Our approach at Got Light is to always enhance the venue, never covering up its natural character.
Screen shot 2013-03-29 at 6.04.40 PM
Q: Would you be able to share a a before an after photograph of a space to exemplify the impact that lighting has in a space?
Screen shot 2013-03-29 at 6.04.40 PM
A: Sure!  Take a look…

Q: Keeping in mind that this all depends on the space, guest count, etc – what do you recommend a couple keep in mind for their lighting budget?
Screen shot 2013-03-29 at 6.04.40 PM
A: In terms of a lighting budget, we at Got Light believe it’s important to always remember two things: timing and power.  We use a lot of heavy equipment.  When we are hanging decor or lighting in a venue, we are generally the first vendor in and the last vendor out.  Other vendors can generally begin their cleanup behind the scenes, but our product stays up and is enjoyed up until the end of the party, so we don’t take anything down until guests have left the event space.  So bear with us, but we do need a bit of time for set up and break down.  This is important to think about when you are booking your venue block and signing your rental contract. The other thing to think about is power!  We work in dozens of historical buildings around San Francisco and the Bay Area, many of which were not designed with lighting for special events in mind!  At Got Light, we are the Bay Area leader in wireless, battery, & LED, paving the way for a greener and more environmentally friendly approach to lighting for the event industry.  The labor and power saving opportunities are endless!   Remember that if you are having your wedding in an outdoor space with a band, photo booth, lighting, and catering – they will all need somewhere to plug their equipment into, as well!
Screen shot 2013-03-29 at 6.04.40 PM

Thank you for such an extensive and informative interview, Ashley!  We can honestly say we have a newfound appreciation for the way ‘good’ lighting and production can positively affect a special event!

Kate and Rob Tie the Knot

Welcome back for part two of our blog post dedicated to Kate and Rob tying the knot.  If you missed our last post of their rehearsal dinner at The CIA at Greystone, check it out here.

For Kate and Rob, Beaulieu Garden served as the perfect setting for them to exchange vows, becoming man and wife amongst their loved ones.  With the sun shining bright, their ceremony took place in the Sunken Garden.  After sneaking away for a private moment in the surrounding vineyards, they celebrated with delicious food and wine below the terrace and then danced the night away under the stars.

The florals for this wedding were a perfect combination of modern and romantic.  We were particularly fond of the bright color palette they chose for their bridesmaids’ bouquets and the long stem tulip bouquet Radeff Design Studios designed for the bride herself.  Chandeliers combined with green and pastel colored floral arrangements created a picturesque setting for dinner and toasts.  Additionally, freestanding ivy-adorned topiaries and orbs flanked pathways and aisles, luring guests towards the terrace and fireplace lounge.  Kate and Rob most definitely tied the knot in style!

Rita + Olin Tie The Knot

Just minutes outside of the small town of Glen Ellen, nestled off the Sonoma Highway, you will find Beltane Ranch. A bed and breakfast with some good ole’ country charm that would be the perfect back drop for Rita and Olin’s September wedding. With fifty-five of their closest friends and family the couple was able to share their love of food and wine with a long intimate dinner table. Some of the evenings favorites served by Paula LeDuc Fine Catering included, Crispy Prosciutto Cups, Peppery Greens with Oven Cured Tomatoes, Braised Lamb Shank, Summer Berry Tartlets and Fresh Blueberry Macaroon Sandwiches, oh my! Enjoy!

Brooke + Damon Tie The Knot at Beaulieu Garden

April showers bring May flowers, as the saying goes and last May was no exception! Katherine Oliver with Cherries Flowers delivered us a wedding full of peonies, garden roses, sweet peas and blooming clematis in beautiful color palette of white, cream, blush and accents of pale peach. We especially love the moss details on the chandeliers provided by Got Light hung over the dinner tables.

And how adorable is the library card catalog, where guests found his or her name on a library card directing them to their dinner table. Once guests arrived to their tables they found a french baguette with their name tied with bakers twine. We hope you enjoy the wedding of Brooke and Damon as much as we do.
